Employee Handbooks – Sometimes handbooks and policies are the first things people think of when they think of HR. Whether that’s good or bad, it is the way it is. If you’re thinking of working with an HR consultant, chances are good one of the reasons is because your policies and handbook need some help! We’ve never written a handbook FOR a client, but we’ve written many handbooks WITH clients. You see, it’s our job to give you options of policies, options of the language addressing those policies, discuss the pros and cons of different alternatives, and work through the iterations until a final version is agreed upon. But it’s ultimately your duty to decide what best reflects both the culture you have, and the culture you want to have. Your policies will answer questions & provide direction for your staff and your managers. They’re creation  needs thoughtful attention.

State and Local guidelines Compliance with nationwide federal laws is important of course, but it’s not all that employers need to stay in line with! We want to continue to keep you aware of and compliant with local and state laws, some of which may be surprising to you if you have only one or two remote staff members in a given location. We’ll educate you on the requirements, discuss options, and collaborate on responses.

Policy Development – This is closely related to employee handbooks, but not every policy that an organization develops might end up in its handbook. There could be travel reimbursement policies that reside with Accounting, IT use and cybersecurity policies that reside with IT, or safety policies that reside with operations. These might have a big impact on the organization, helping to manage risks, costs, and efficiency, without ever appearing in the handbook. Additionally, the development of Affirmative Action Plans requires the creation of supporting compliant programs and processes, as well as the implementation of training for HR staff. These initiatives ensure the organization meets regulatory requirements and fosters an inclusive workplace, further supporting organizational goals and legal compliance. If required, we can assist with the annual completion of EEO-1 and VETS 4212 reports. We can also work with your AAP vendor on your behalf to ensure that hiring, promotion, and selection efforts address underutilization and targets (if any).

  • Compensation – No. Not everyone in a job must be paid exactly the same amount. There are many non-discriminatory reasons for variances. But to attract and retain talent, you need to be sure your pay is on target, both externally to the market, and with your team members internally. Do you have the data on what those pay rates should be? Would you know how to interpret the data if you had it? We can get it and we can tell you what it means! And in the effort we can help you get and keep good talent. We do this while ensuring you’re complying with the growing amount of pay transparency laws and identifying any potential discriminatory trends that need to be addressed!
  • Recordkeeping/Retention – We want to make you efficient. Storing data properly makes it easy to access. We want to make you compliant. If you don’t keep what you should, for as long as you should, you could find yourself in hot water later and possibly weaken your defense against a lawsuit because you don’t have the materials you should. Let us work with you to identify options and put procedures in place.
